M.A. History and Culture of the Baltic Sea Region

The interdisciplinary master's degree course ‘History and Culture of the Baltic Sea Region’ is aimed in particular at students with a philological or historical background (B.A. or equivalent degree) who wish to specialise in the culturally and historically complex Baltic Sea region. The degree course combines cultural studies, historical studies, linguistics and literary studies in order to prepare students for activities within cultural and societal exchange in the Baltic Sea region.

There are two compulsory areas of study: ‘Cultural Theory and Cultural Developments in the Baltic Sea Region’ (10 ECTS credits) and ‘History, Cultures and Languages of the Baltic Sea Region’ (20 ECTS credits), as well as the compulsory elective area of language practice (10 ECTS credits), in which students can either deepen their knowledge of German or another language spoken in the Baltic Sea region. In addition, there is the elective area (20 ECTS credits), in which students can specialise in certain areas, a compulsory semester abroad (30 ECTS credits) and a master's dissertation and defence (30 ECTS credits). Both the compulsory areas and the elective area are predominantly studied in English. The language of instruction for the compulsory electives depends on the language chosen. Graduates of the master's degree course are awarded the degree Master of Arts (M.A.).
