The subject Slavonic Studies covers the Slavonic languages and cultures with 15 languages and approx. 290 million speakers.
Students choose a Slavonic language that forms the core of the Slavonic Studies degree course (either Polish, Russian, Czech or Ukrainian).
Previous knowledge of Slavonic languages is not required. The degree course also teaches basic knowledge of a second Slavonic language (either Polish, Russian, Czech or Ukrainian).
Students also acquire knowledge in the fields of linguistics, literature and cultural studies.
Students will learn about the structure of the contemporary language and methods of describing it and gain an insight into the history of language, an overview of the epochs and genres of literature and access to theories and methods.
Furthermore, students gain an understanding of the connections between social and cultural developments in cultural studies.
Other key qualifications of graduates from the degree course include a critical and creative approach to information and knowledge, advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to analyse linguistic, cultural and artistic structures and processes and to present academic facts in an easily comprehensible and linguistically sound manner, both orally and in writing.
The bachelor's degree course in Slavonic Studies offers initial professional training and aims to provide graduates with a wide range of qualifications.
Of course, Slavonic Studies graduates can expand their professional fields through specific additional qualifications - be it in IT, economics, law or political science.
Slavonic Studies graduates can find employment in the public and private sectors, in the press, radio and television, or in cultural management. Other professional fields include language mediation, tourism and work in the education sector.
